A Local Alternative to CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar for WordPerfect Files

CloudConvert can convert a .wpd. That is not the question for a legacy WordPerfect folder.

Local Windows PC with .wpd files behind a shield, versus cloud uploads marked insecure

TL;DR

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar are upload-and-wait converters. They are fine for one modern file. A legacy WordPerfect archive is a folder of .wpd files on a Windows PC. WPD Converter does that job locally. CloudConvert can convert a .wpd. That is not the question. The question is whether every legacy brief should leave the building.

What those three actually are

CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar are web converters. You upload a file to their servers, wait while their machines process it, then download the result. That is the same upload model every major online converter uses: the file leaves your PC and sits on infrastructure you do not own until the job finishes (and sometimes after).

CloudConvert processes uploads on its machines and says files are deleted within 24 hours. The free plan allows 10 conversions per day with a 1 GB maximum file size. Paid use runs on credits — packages that never expire, or monthly plans. CloudConvert publishes WordPerfect (.wpd) converter pages; it can convert a .wpd. That capability is not in dispute.

Convertio Lite is $11.99 per month, or $6.99 per month when billed yearly, with a 1 GB size limit and 1,000 credits per month. Zamzar stores each upload on its server. Free accounts get 2 files per 24 hours. Paid plans are Basic at $12, Pro at $19, and Business at $39 per month (USD), with size caps of 200 MB, 400 MB, and 2 GB, and paid online storage of 5 GB, 20 GB, and 100 GB.

A WordPerfect archive is not one upload

Law-firm, city, and family folders of legacy files are dozens or hundreds of .wpd files. Credits, daily caps, and 1 GB free limits are the wrong shape. You remember the matter, not twenty filenames to pick in a browser.

Why legacy .wpd files should stay on this PC

Pleadings and old correspondence hold names. Sending the folder to a converter in search means a copy exists on a machine you do not own. Local conversion removes that step.

What WPD Converter does instead

WPD Converter runs on Windows. Point it at a file or a folder of .wpd files. Convert to DOCX or PDF on this PC.

  1. Add the legacy WordPerfect folder.
  2. Choose DOCX or PDF.
  3. Convert offline.

Warning

Do not upload a legal or family .wpd pile to CloudConvert, Convertio, Zamzar, or a no-name wpd-to-pdf site.

When the web tools are still right

One ordinary non-private file: online is reasonable. This article is for the legacy WordPerfect folder.

Summary

Those three convert files you upload. WPD Converter converts legacy .wpd files you already have, on this PC.
